On the Art of Cutting Metals
Introduction
Frederic Winslow Taylor is best known for the development of Scientific Management or Taylorism which is the methodology of production that breaks every action, job or task of production into small and simple segments which can be easily analyzed and taught.
What is less well known is that he started development of Scientific Management while working as the machine shop Forman at the Midvale Steel Company in 1880. His job there was to get machinists to work at a faster pace but he was defeated because only the machinists knew how to operate the lathes, shapers and milling machines and Taylor did not.
Mr. Taylor proposed to the management of the Midvale Steel Company that he research and test all aspects of metal cutting and with that information develop the knowledge needed to efficiently machine parts and by doing this take control of the machine shop away from the machinists and put it back in the hands of the management. This effort started a 26 year period of experiments and analysis of the results of these experiments which culminated in this report titled "On The Art Of Cutting Metals" made to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in December 1906.
This book is a primer on how to be a machinist, designed to teach managers the most efficient ways to cut metal from castings and forging. 90% of the metal removed from the raw parts is termed "rough cutting" and can be performed by semi skilled laborers or machine operators under close supervision of management and with the knowledge contained in this volume production can be increased 300% to 500% by this practice.
The methods in this book were adopted immediately by American Industry and we are still using these methods daily in industry and in home machine shops but since the book has been out of print for 110 years no one knows where the procedures came from.
Who invented High Speed Steel? Who started the practice of cooling metal cutting operations with a stream of water? Who developed the charts or slide rules for feed, speed and depth of cut? The Atlas and South Bend lathe manuals show a set of cutting tools, who designed them? Frederic Taylor developed all these items and presented them in this book.
The Atlas Manual of Lathe Operations actually acknowledges Taylor's contribution to their manual on the first page of the Cutting Tools section of their manual but I did not recognize the importance of that dedication until I read "On The Art Of Cutting Metals".
Finally, Read the book three times. The first time just to get an overview of the many topics he presents. The Second time to get the social engineering he foments for getting the control of the machine shop back into the hands of management. The third time focus on the rules he researched and proved were the most efficient at cutting metal and how to decide whether to use cooling water or not, curved cutting edge roughing tool or straight edged tool and how to adjust the feed and speed as you make these choices in your shop.
